Here is what you'll need:
- a box
- scissors and boxcutters
- glue stick or adhesive spray or mod podge
- clear packing tape
- steve head print outs found HERE
- heavy recipe book to hold down the glued pages (optional)
First, you'll need a box. The box we bought was 10x10" since anything larger was swallowing up our son's shoulders once inside the box...
Then, you need the Steve head print outs - we don't have a fancy printer so our friend printed them out for us like so - and Steve's head pretty much measured 11x11" (excluding the white space) - however you manage to print it you can always cut and glue and piece back together on the box -
I decided to start with the top of Steve's head since I figured that if I screw that up... it would be the least noticeable!
Make your box and tape it shut on one end. We used mod podge but you can use a glue stick or spray adhesive just as well and cover the entire top area. Very carefully and gently lay and smooth out the top head print out. Be careful not to rub the wrinkles too much so that the paper doesn't tear. My best advice is to lay it out on top, know how you will place it and then glue and place it.
I decided to leave the white edges and glue the entire thing so that I would have some overlap to work with - if you happen to notice the lines and squares on the box that is because I was initially going to paint the entire head myself!! Maybe next time!
Now that you have the top of the head as your guide you can start assembling the rest of the head. Take the print out of the back of Steve's head and cut off the top white edge so that you can line it up with the already glued-on top of Steve's head - like so...
Line it up, test it so you know how it should lay out and then glue it on...
Next I decided to do the face to make sure it would lay out nice and smooth and leave the sides for covering up any mistakes if necessary.
Make sure to line up with the top of the head first and not the bottom... I used as little glue as possible for Steve's face to minimize wrinkles and bumps keeping the majority of the glue on the side flaps. However the area around the eyes should be well glued since we will be cutting out the actual eyes in the end...
Now we're ready for the sides. Cut them all around and lay out to make sure it fits right. Make sure to trim off any excess from the edges.
Line up the colors and/or "pixels" in the image for a super clean look!
Do the same to the other side of Steve's face ...
I used my recipe book to weigh down glued on pages and page through some recipes while waiting for glue to dry :)
Now it's time to get brutal with Steve and cut out his eyes - sorry Steve!
Not really a box cutter is it?! I couldn't find my box cutter and the scissors were not easy to handle for this - please be very careful cutting out Steve's eyes! I don't want anyone to end up in the emergency room!!
Trim, add glue, etc where ever needed but your Steve head should be pretty much done.
You have the option of either folding in the bottom flaps of the box or cutting them off - mine refused to stay folded so I opted to cut them off completely.
And here is the final result on a very happy "Steve" :)
